What is Microsoft Azure?
A lot of people answer that it’s a server or virtual machine that is hosted somewhere in the world, they have some of those words right because they are virtual machines to which one connects remotely and that they are hosted in one of the centers Microsoft data worldwide.
In other words, Microsoft Azure is Microsoft’s public cloud computing platform where a number of cloud services are provided.
So what is IaaS, PaaS, SaaS?
Now that we know that Microsoft Azure is much more than a virtual machine, the best way to understand these concepts related to the cloud is to know the level of responsibility you have when managing each one.
What do I mean by the level of responsibility? Let’s look at the following comparison of administrative responsibilities when choosing each of the different service models in Microsoft Azure (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) comparing against the traditional on-site model (on-premise):
As you can see in the previous image, each model provides certain administrative benefits compared to having our servers on-site (on-premise), since it takes away responsibility for the administration of these, which in turn brings others benefits such as cost reduction, complexity in resource management, availability etc.
How do I know which one to choose?
Well, for this we must evaluate if the model to choose is adapted to our need, for example it may be that the administration of the operating system we want to do it on our own could choose the IaaS model or if for example we want a virtual one where the application server already be ready just to deploy our application so we could choose a PaaS model. What if we want a virtual one where a SQL Server Database Service is ready? Then we could choose a SaaS model.
The following image shows differences of using each of these models such as cost, complexity in administration among others compared to the traditional on-site model (on-premise):
